Pondicherry, Mar 23: The police force in Pondicherry would soon be modernised, according to the chief minister N Rangasamy. The Chief Minister, who paid a one-day visit to Mahe yesterday, referred to the steps taken by the government to ameliorate the lot of the police personnel. Constables would soon be promoted to head constables, he said.
Rangasamy, who laid the foundation stone for a Rs 1 crore flood control project, also referred to the steps taken to eradicate illicit distillation of arrack, an official press release said today.
He also claimed that the health and education sectors in the Union Territory had made good progress.

The Chief Minister later gave away financial assistance to four patients from the medical relief fund, the release said.
Health minister E Valsaraj and parliamentary secretary A V Sridharan (both elected from Mahe to the assembly) were among those who spoke.
