Bhopal, Feb 12: The Uma Bharati government in Madhya Pradesh has finally scrapped the deal to market the Ujjain Kumbh through Linterland, a subsidiary of the advertising giant Lintas.
Last year, the MP government decided to market the mela and earn some money for itself. But now, the BJP government ended the deal because of rumblings about the way the Digvijay Singh Government had handed out the contract.

The erstwhile Congress government in the state had even signed a memorandum of understanding with Linterland. This gave the company exclusive rights to sell advertising space everywhere from bathing ghats to traffic islands and the skies above Ujjain.
Linterland would also have got the right to choose an exclusive media partner. The company had to deliver a total revenue of at least Rs 10 crore and keep 7 per cent as commission.
But as soon as power changed hands in Bhopal, the deal ran into rough weather with everyone who had been marginalised by it from the district administration to the sadhus.
"Sadhus are upset about the commercialisation of a religous event. There are other grey areas pertaining to law and order, control of the municipal area and which are creating problems," said Dr Rajesh Rajora, Collector of Ujjain.
