Lucknow, May 25: The Uttar Pradesh government has shifted the district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police of Varanasi on the directives of the Election Commission, official sources here said today. The EC had directed the state government to shift the two officials for their failure to ensure compliance of the model code of conduct in the Chiraigaon vidhan sabha by-poll. The by-poll was scheduled for May 21 but the EC postponed it by a month after its observers reported that several ministers of the Mayawati government were violating the model code of conduct in the constituency.
