The BJP’s state working committee for West Bengal is meeting in Kolkata today to discuss the party`s intention to contest more than 200 seats as well as the shape of their alliance in the forthcoming assembly elections. Meanwhile, senior WB Congress leaders are in Delhi to finalise tie-up with Trinamool. BJP vice-president Kailashpati Mishra would also attend the meeting, he added.
The West Bengal BJP today claimed it was expecting many state-level Trinamool Congress leaders to join the party. On Tuesday a thousand TC party workers had defected to BJP.
A number of `state-level Trinamool Congress leaders will soon join the BJP while hundreds of Trinamool workers have joined our party in Nadia`s Santipur, Haringhata and other areas, BJP`S state general secretary Pratap Banerjee said. A number of `state-level Trinamool Congress leaders will soon join the BJP while hundreds of Trinamool workers have joined our party in Nadia`s Santipur, Haringhata and other areas, BJP`S state general secretary Pratap Banerjee said.
Another exodus is forthcoming from districts close to Kolkata, Banerjee said.
BJP, Banerjee said, would prefer contesting over 200 seats, while leaving some to three NDA allies in the ensuing elections. The BJP state election committee would meet for two days from tomorrow to discuss the party`s intention to contest more than 200 seats, following electoral ally Trinamool Congress` pull-out from the NDA and its lack of response to BJP`s call for giving an undertaking of support to Vajpayee government, he said.
Stating that BJP would finalise its lists of 206 candidates for the coming polls at the meeting, Banerjee said the party was willing to `leave` some seats, to be specified later, to allies Biju Janata Dal, Samata Party and JD(U).
