The Jack Russell terrier also appeared in the Reese Witherspoon film "Water for Elephants".

He was put down Friday in Los Angeles after battling a prostate tumor, TMZ reports. His owner Omar Von Mueller said it was a difficult decision, but Uggie had been suffering with the tumor, and the last few weeks were especially difficult.

Uggie won the Palm Dog Award at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival for his work in "The Artist". He did all his stunts in the movie and was the first canine to have his paw prints on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
