Kathmandu, Nov 24: The Nepalese government will soon
set up a rehabilitation centre for surrendered Maoist rebels,
Minister for Information and Communication Kamal Thapa has
said here.
Thapa, also the Acting Prime Minister, said separate
detention centres would be established for Maoists arrested
during search operations in the wake of reports of some its
cadres being missing from captivity.
The rehabilitation centre, for those Maoists who surrendered or abandoned violence and wanted to lead a normal life, would assure full security besides providing them skill development programmes, he said.
Stressing that parliamentary poll is the only way to end the present constitutional deadlock, he said the government is committed to holding elections both at local level and parliamentary level by creating minimum peaceful atmosphere.
Asked to specify the date for elections, Thapa said "we are confident of holding polls within months."
The security forces are achieving success in countering the Maoists, whose military strength is "weakening" day by day, Thapa claimed.
