Stourton (England), July 26: England football star David Beckham took his place today among the ancient heroes. A large portrait of Beckham was unveiled in the pantheon, a classical building at Stourhead - a well-known landscaped garden in the west of England.

The painting of Beckham by artist Barry Novis shows Beckham in his England uniform with his arms raised in triumph. The portrait stands among classical figures such as Hercules. The painting will be on display for a month.

"The garden in the 18th century echoed with references to heroes and gods of the ancient world, a philosophy we have brought to the 21st century by placing a modern-day hero alongside these class Ical models," said Stourhead gardener Richard Higgs.

Stourhead spokeswoman Kathryn Boyd Adde, "In the 18th century, these figures were a very important part of the symbolism of the arts and the English classical movement. But today, we don't relate as much to them, and Beckham was chosen as a more relevant character, a dramatic analogy, a modern hero - and also as a bit of fun."
