Thiruvananthapuram, Sept 01: BJP president Venkaiah Naidu today said unlike "other parties following dynasty rule" the son of a farmer could become BJP president which showed that it was a "party with a difference".
Addressing a public meeting here as part of the party's general council meeting, Naidu said, "in no other party this could happen. In congress, it's always been Nehru, Indira, Rajiv, Sonia and in Kerala Karunakaran and Muraleedharan."
"I had been writing the name of Vajpayee on the walls during election campaigns and I never imagined that he would at one point of time propose my name for the party president's post", Naidu said.
It was only on the basis of ideology and programme that a 52 year-old leader was picked up for the top party post, which reflected a `generational change' in the BJP, he said.

"The BJP was earlier a single column party. Today there is no column without the mention of BJP. The party is now the focus of all TV programmes. It has grown to have a three crore membership", he claimed.
"Samata and Mamata may have problems with each other. The DMK and AIADMK may have problems. But all of them do not have problems with the BJP", he said, adding, 23 parties were now working with the party which was described as `alone.'
The BJP also had groomed a second rank leadership unlike the Congress. In other parties, everyone wanted to go to the government while in BJP ministers were resigning to work for the party. Belying predictions, the party had also been able to provide a stable government at the centre, he said. Bureau Report
