West Bengal transport minister Subhas Chakraborty appealed to taxi unions not to resort to indefinite strike from midnight tonight in the metropolis and adjoining districts in support of their demands. The minister in a statement said that the taxi unions should not resort to strike when discussion was still on. The discussion will also be held on Monday on their demands, he said.
The strike has been called by major taxi unions including the Bengal Taxi Association and progressive Taximen's Union protesting against, among other things, police harrassment of cab drivers.
The president of Progressive Taximen's Union Madan Mitra said that they were compelled to go to strike as the state government had failed to redress their grievances.
