The leader of Nepal's main Opposition party on Tuesday called for Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala to resign following the death of 37 policemen in attacks by Maoist rebels.
General secretary of the Nepal Communist Party-United Marxist Leninist (NCP-UML) Madhav Kumar Nepal said that the premier had totally failed in his promise to restore order to the country. “If Koirala does not resign in the prevailing circumtances, he should be removed,” Nepal told an NCP-UML event, a party official said. Thirty-five policemen were killed in separate attacks at police posts in Rukumkot, western Nepal and Dolakha to the east on Monday. Two more died on Monday night in another attack in Palpa district, also in western Nepal. The NCP-UML, which opposes the Maoist insurgency, has obstructed proceedings in Parliament since the current session opened in February in a separate row over a deal for Royal Nepal Airlines to lease a plane from Laudaair of Austria.
