New Delhi, Oct 10: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a report from the Director General of Police (DGP), Jammu and Kashmir, asking whether any compensation, ex-gratia or otherwise, has been paid to the next of kin of Vaishno Devi pilgrims killed in the terrorist attack on July 20, 2003.
The direction was passed by the commission at its recent meeting after considering an initial report received from the
state DGP, NHRC said here today.
Takinng suo-motu cognizance of media reports on the killing of seven Vaishno Devi pilgrims, the commission had earlier sought a report on the attack and also about the alleged laxity in security as reported in media.
NHRC had noted with concern that it was a matter of serious concern if the laxity in security had been conveyed to the DGP as reported in the media and no immediate steps were taken.
The commission called upon the authorities to ensure that full force of the law must be brought to bear in dealing with such acts of terrorism and bringing to justice those who prepetrate or abet them, they added.
