Chandigarh, Apr 02: The city has been put on red alert to deal with any emergency following reports that the killer pneumonia virus has claimed many lives and infected several others in many Asian countries. Punjab governor and Chandigarh administrator, Lt Gen (retd) J F R Jacob today sounded an alert to the health department to deal with the emergency, if any, regarding the killer Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
General Jacob asked the director, health services and director, government medical college and hospital, to coordinate their efforts and pool their information, in order to take all preventive measures. He said that though there were no reports yet that the virus had infected anyone in India, the health department should take not take any chance. "The health department has been asked to screen the foreign tourists coming from the affected countries for the suspected virus," he said.
Meanwhile, the people have been requested to immediately contact the health authorities in case of getting in contact with patients suspected of carrying the virus. The health authorities have been asked to keep a close watch on crowded areas especially in the slums and doctors have been directed not to take lightly patients reporting with symptoms of common cold, cough and fever.
Two isolation wards have been kept ready in general hospital, sector 16 and GMCH, Sector 32. Bureau Report
