Chandigarh, Jan 16: Cold wave sweeping the entire northern region for third consecutive week, today showed no signs of abating with night temperatures dropping to sub-zero in Kashmir and almost touching zero degrees celcius in the plains of Punjab and Haryana where Hisar recorded 0.8 c and Ludhiana one degree celsius. Cold conditions forced people indoors as Srinagar reeled at minus 3.4 degrees c and while Jammu was warmer at 5.2 degrees c, still three degrees below normal, the meteorological department said here. Amritsar was the second coldest place in Punjab with a three degree below normal minimum at 2.0 c while Patiala also experienced a chilly night at 3.5 c, the met department said.
Chandigarh residents also braved a cold night after the mercury dropped three degrees below normal to touch 4.0 c. Ambala in Haryana recorded a low of 3.1 c.


Bad weather forced cancellation of several flights including the Indian Airlines flight to Goa and Jet Airways flight to Mumbai for 15th time this year. Several trains including New Delhi-Chandigarh-Kalka Shatabdi, Howrah-Kalka, Jodhpur-Kalka, Lucknow-Saharanpur-Chandigarh were running behind schedule by four hours.
In Himachal, Bhuntar and Sundernagar groaned under terrible cold as both the towns recorded similar lows at minus 0.5 c.
The met office forecast partly cloudy days in Himachal while fog and low clouds are likely at many places in Punjab and Haryana over the next two days.
