Islamabad, Feb 10: Authorities are investigating an explosion at a research institute linked to Pakistan's nuclear energy program that killed one person and left another in critical condition, officials said today. The explosion at Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences occured yesterday during laboratory work.

"An inquiry is being carried out into whether the blast was caused by human negligence or by some other cause," an official at the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission told the news reporter on condition of anonymity. The victim, a laboratory operator, was hit by splinters from the cylinder that contained liquid nitrogen. Another man working in the laboratory was injured, and was in critical condition, the official said.

"It was not a big bang and caused little damage to the building," the official added. The Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission runs the engineering institute as its educational offshoot. It teaches subjects such as nuclear engineering and information technology.
