Washington, Mar 11: Support for the anticipated US war on Iraq has risen to 57 per cent even though voters believe Iraq is only the third worst threat after al-Qaeda and North Korea, according to a poll released today. But the latest Zogby America poll also shows that despite the increase in overall backing for the war, President George W. Bush's job performance approval rating has slipped from 57 per cent to 54 per cent since February.
The survey showed a split along party and racial lines on the war, with 62 per cent of whites supporting the potential military action and 75 percent of blacks opposing it.
Republicans overwhelmingly support the war (84-12 per cent), independents are divided (52-46 per cent), while democrats are largely opposed (35-61 per cent).
Taken March 5-7, the survey shows that 57 percent of those polled support the war, up from 54 per cent in February 17-20.
Opposition to the war has remained steady at around 40 per cent.
Poll respondents also placed al-Qaeda as the largest danger to the United States (32 per cent), North Korea as the second largest threat (30 per cent), followed by Iraq (22 per cent).
The poll has a 3.2 per cent of error. Bureau Report
