Mumbai HC bench to visit site of 1999 shooting
Mumbai, Sept 25: A division bench of the Mumbai High Court will today visit the spot where alleged Chhota Shakeel gangsters had opened indiscriminate fire on a group of people killing three persons and injuring seven, including former city Mayor, Milind Vaidya, in 1999.
Justices J A Patil and A S Aguiar would visit the spot near Shiv Sena office in Mahim at 3 pm to appreciate the evidence, Special Public Prosecutor Rohini Salian told reporters.
The judges would be accompanied by the prosecution team and defence lawyers.
The court is hearing a reference made by Maharashtra government for confirmation of death sentence imposed on three alleged Chhota Shakeel gangsters in this case. It is also hearing appeal filed by the convicts.
The trial court had awarded capital punishment to three accused, life term imprisonment to one and ten years RI to two others.
The convicts are Mohammed Zubair Kasam Shaikh Tabrez, Fazal Mohammed Shaikh and Azizuddin Zairuddin Shaikh. They were convicted on September 5, 2000 by designated judge A P Bhangale under provisions of IPC and MCOCA, a stringent act.
The trio had opened fire indiscriminately on the people at a public place when they were speaking to former Mayor Milind Vaidya outside Shiv Sena office at Mahim in central Mumbai on March four, 1999.
Vaidya and nine others were seriously injured in the firing. Later, three of them succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. However, Vaidya survived the attack.
