Srinagar, Oct 13: Power crisis in Kashmir valley has worsened with a further dip in its generation prompting authorities to go in for additional cuts in the supply.

Power Development Department (PDD) has announced an additional two hour-cut during nights and increased curtailment by half an hour during evenings on load shedding days.
The major reason for decline in power generation is the fall in water discharge of river Jhelum, PDD officials said.

As per official figures, the water discharge of river Jhelum has fallen to less than 2000 cusecs against 7000 in summer, they said. "We are overdrawing power from Northern Grid to meet our demand, which is shooting up after every day and we are trying to strike a balance," they said.

Official figures suggest that against the demand of 82 lakh units, the department is supplying only 65 lakh units by pooling from all resources. To compensate the shortfall of 20 lakh units, the department has decided to go in for more cuts, they said.
