Beijing, May 05: One person was killed, three others injured and over 1,000 houses flattened when a strong earthquake measuring 5.8 degrees jolted Yopurga county in the quake-prone Xinjiang region in northwest China. An old person died of heart attack due to the quake that hit Yopurga at 11.44 pm (2114 IST) local time yesterday, officials were quoted as saying by China’s official news agency. The quake, which measured 5.8 degrees on the Richter scale, was 10 km to the south of the epicentre of the deadly February 24 earthquake that shook Jiashi and Bachu counties, the State Seismological Bureau said.
Sunday`s quake flattened more than 1,600 rooms, damaged another 2,400 rooms and killed over 1,000 heads of livestock, according to the report from the regional capital.
The bureau has sent a working group to the quake-hit area to deal with the aftermath of the disaster. The February 24 quake claimed the lives of left more than 4,000 injured.
