Sopore, July 04: Launching a scathing attack on Hurriyat Conference, fire-brand Jamaat-e-Islami leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani today sought support of his party to form a cadre-based alternative to the 25-party amalgam, but did not announce it formally. "The need of the hour is to form a party based on Jamaat-e-Islami cadres to take the Kashmir issue to its destined resolution," Geelani said addressing his first public meeting since his release from a Ranchi jail in February.
Geelani said those who genuinely wanted to resolve the Kashmir issue can be inducted in a newly-floated party and sought support of his parent party (Jamaat) in this regard. Referring to the June 28 meeting of second rung Hurriyat leaders at his residence, Geelani said two proposals were put forth during the discussions, including floating a new forum as Hurriyat had "failed in carrying out its duties".
"Hurriyat's performance has been disappointing regarding the last year's assembly elections. The two proposals we received were forming a new forum or restructuring the Hurriyat Conference as it is a recognized platform," Geelani said. He said a decision on this would be taken later.
However, he added that he was personally against floating another forum as "10 years of experience has shown that forum politics has failed". Bureau Report
