Srinagar, Feb 29: Police today fired teargas and used batons to break up a Muharram procession violating prohibitory orders. Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) vice chairman Javeed Mir and more than 50 others were detained.
Official sources said supporters of the JKLF led by Javeed Mir took out the procession from the party headquarters at Maisuma.
However, when the march reached the main telephone exchange, police fired teargas and used cane sticks. A JKLF spokesman said its chief spokesman Tahir Ahmad Mir was injured in the police action.
Police also used teargas and batons on a Muharram procession at Abi-Guzar and Dalgate today and about 40 people were taken into custody. Muharram processions in the city are banned for the last ten years. They are only allowed in Shia dominated rural areas.
