Hyderabad, Oct 26: Hyderabad, rapidly growing capital of Andhra Pradesh, is expected to benefit from the Rs 4,000 crore Metro rail service project by 2010, according to Union Urban Development Minister Bandaru Dattatreya. "The union urban development ministry and Andhra Pradesh government will soon sign a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to begin work on the project," Dattatreya told reporters here today.
"Initially the Union and state government will invest 15 per cent each and the remaining 70 per cent would be raised through public funding and private participation," he said. An estimated 90 lakh vehicles would be on the city's roads by 2011 and the present infrastructure "will be unable to cope with load", he said adding the metro will service the "length and breadth of the city".
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is keen to implement the Metro rail project and officials from Delhi will visit the city soon to assist in the groundwork required, Dattatreya added. Dattatreya said his ministry has sanctioned Rs 364 crore towards urban infrastructure development.
