London, May 28: "The Matrix Reloaded" shot straight to the top of the British box office chart in its opening weekend, according to figures released on Tuesday. The science fiction epic, starring Keanu Reeves as a futuristic hero fighting to save the world from robots, took 8,897,324 pounds ($14.60 million) in its opening three days.
"It is the fourth highest opening weekend ever," said Robert Mitchell, box office analyst at chart compiler Screen International.
Mitchell said it made less in its first three days than the two Harry Potter films and "Star Wars: Episode II -- Attack of the Clones."
The futuristic thriller made an estimated $93.3 million in its opening weekend in North America, the second biggest debut behind "Spider-Man."
Second on the British chart was "X2: X-Men United," based on the comics about a pack of mutants, which fell to second place after taking 903,221 pounds.
Australian Outback comedy "Kangaroo Jack" bounced down one place to third with 529,077 pounds in ticket sales.
James Bond spoof "Johnny English," starring Mr Bean actor Rowan Atkinson, fell one spot to fourth, adding more than four million pounds to its 18.4 million pounds total.

Down one place to number five was "Old School," a comedy about a group of 30-something men who try to recapture the fun of their college days.

Romantic comedy "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" was steady at number six.

At number seven was new entry "The Hot Chick," a gender-switch comedy in which a cheerleader swaps bodies with a 30-year-old slob.
Horror film "Darkness Falls" dropped three places to number eight and Disney sequel "The Jungle Book 2" was down one spot to nine.

Director Joel Schumacher's crime thriller "Phone Booth" completed the top 10 after falling three places.
