Colombo, Feb 22: With the internationally-monitored ceasefire agreement between the Sri Lankan government and the Tamil Tiger rebels having completed two years, the rebels have said that they are not prepared to renegotiate the existing truce agreement even after April 2 general elections.
Reiterating the organisation's commitment to honour the truce, the head of the LTTE's peace secretariat S Puleedevan has stated that the LTTE was prepared to negotiate with any party that comes into power after April 2 general elections.
''As far as the LTTE is concerned, the MoU is between the government and the LTTE. We are not concerned with the statements of a political party that has just become democratic. Wimal Weerawansa has no authority to state that the ceasefire agreement does not exist,” a Colombo-based newspaper quoted Puleedevan as saying in response to statements made by JVP propaganda secretary Wimal Weerawansa.
He also said that the LTTE would not be drawn into a political confrontation with the new alliance, the United People's Freedom Party (UPFA), the report said.
''We are only waiting for the political situation in the south to resolve itself and then we are ready to begin negotiations again. We are willing to negotiate with any party that comes into power,'' he said when asked whether LTTE was willing to negotiate with the new alliance in the event it was elected to power.
He, however, has made it clear the LTTE's position that it would resume talks only if the organisation is recognised as the sole representative of the Tamils. Bureau Report
