Bath (England), Sept 03: Peter West, who covered Wimbledon, the Olympics, cricket and rugby for the British Broadcasting Corp. for more than 40 years, died on Tuesday at the age 83 after a long illness, his family said. A familiar voice and face on radio and TV, West started his broadcasting career in 1947 by covering Warwickshire Vs. South Africa cricket for BBC TV. Five years later he joined the BBC's Test match team and, in 1968, was handed the presenter's role. He remained the face of the BBC's cricket coverage until 1986. West also commentated on rugby from the 1950s onwards and, as well as being a presenter at summer Olympics, covered a wide range of other sports including golf, athletics, hockey and tennis.
He is survived by his wife Pauline, one daughter and two sons. Bureau Report
