Kohima, Aug 05: Three new districts will be carved out in Nagaland by upgrading the three existing sub-divisions to fulfill the long pending demand of people and for administrative convenience, official sources said today. A decision for upgrading the Peren, Kiphire and Longleng sub-divisions to full-fledged districts was taken last night at a state cabinet meeting here chaired by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio, the sources said. Peren, Kiphire and Longleng will be carved out from Kohima and Tuensang districts respectively. Notification to this effect would be issued soon and the Government decided to form an official level committee to execute the decision at the earliest. Both Congress and ruling democratic alliance of Nagaland in their manifestos assured people of the respective sub-divisions to upgrade those administrative areas to full fledged districts if they came to power after the assembly polls. With this the total number of districts in the state will be 11.
The hill state has a population of about 20 lakh and area of 16,579 sq km
