Mumbai, Oct 28: Samajwadi Party MP and Maharashtra unit president, Abu Asim Azmi today denied that his son Farhan Azmi, detained in Dubai on drug charges, was possessing drugs and clarified that Farhan was detained for being in a group, of which one persons was caught with drugs.
"My son did not possess drugs and is likely to be released soon. One of Farhan's friend was in possession of drugs and not him," Azmi told news agencies here.
Farhan, alongwith three others, identified as Prashant Dandekar, Bonnie Chhabria and Shaan Sippy, was detained from a hotel in Dubai on drug charges on October 21.
Abu Azmi said his son had gone to Dubai on the pretext of looking for a cook for their Italian restaurant at Colaba in south Mumbai.
"I'm unaware whether my son smokes cigarette or not and I was shocked to know the charges he was detained for," he said.
"My son had earlier called up and said he was detained for driving, but later it was discovered that the detention was for some other reason," the Samajwadi leader said, adding "I'm angry with my son and would not go personally to Dubai for getting him released."
Farhan owns hotels Koyla and Basilico in South Mumbai.
Bonnie's father, Dilip Chhabria, too has said his son was not in possession of drugs.
Meanwhile, police sources said the hotel, from where the foursome were picked, allegedly belongs to drug mafia kingpin Iqbal Mirchi, who has been giving a slip to Mumbai Police since many years.
