300 more evacuated as landslides continue in Uttarkashi

The landslides, continuing for the ninth consecutive day today, affected new localities like collectorate and masjid mohalla areas in the town, situated on the foothills of Varunavat mountain, sub-divisional magistrate, Uttarkashi, Mahendra Prasad told a news agency.
A team of geologists took stock of the situation, but "are of the view that any treatment to stop landslides cannot be taken up till the mud settles," he said. "Landslides have not stopped even for a second; in such a scenario, it is difficult to make any assessment," a geologist from the Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee, said.
Meanwhile, patients in the district hospital are being moved to a building in Tiloth area of Uttarkashi, the district headquarters, while the collctorate is also being shifted to another building. The total loss due to landslides has been put to the tune of Rs 12 crore, he said.
Though telecommunications network was affected in some areas yesterday, mobile and landline network are working properly today, official sources said. Electricity supply is also normal, they said.
No loss of life has been reported due to landslides so far in the town. Bureau Report
