The Tamil Nadu government has convened an all-party meeting on Saturday to discuss the future course of action in view of the failure of the meeting of the Cauvery Monitoring Committee held in Delhi on Thursday to deliberate on the implementation of the interim award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal.
Making a suo motu statement in the Tamil Nadu assembly on Friday, state PWD minister Balavai Sundaram said no positive decision was taken at Thursday’s meeting for the release of water for the Cauvery delta. The Karnataka government was to have released 113.93 tmc of water to Tamil Nadu as per the interim award. However, only 50.73 tmc had been realised so far, leaving a deficit of 63.20 tmc of water, he pointed out.
The minister said Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa had written to Prime Minister A B Vajpayee and her Karnataka counterpart on 27-7-2001 and also on 23-8-2001, pleading for urgent release of water for the Cauvery delta.

The available storage at the Mettur dam would last only for nine days, Sundaram said. Bureau Report
