New Delhi, Aug 19: Union Minister for Forest and Environment T R Baalu today said that the NDA government during its four years of rule had done ''commendably well'' on various fronts, especially the economic front, with its ''prudent policies and pragmatic approach''. Intervening during discussion on the Congress-sponsored no confidence motion against the government, Baalu (DMK) opposed the motion saying it lacked ''vision and direction''.

He praised the handling of the commerce ministry by his party colleague Murasoli Maran, who is ailing, when he was the minister and said that he had ably pleaded the cause of India in the WTO Doha round.

Baalu said that the exports had gone up by 58 per cent during the last four years of the nda government. The inflation had shown a downward trend registering an average of 3 per cent to 4 per cent. Nobody had felt the pinch of inflation in the country, he said.
Amid strong protests by the Congress members, the minister reeled out facts and figures to list the achievements made by India in telecommunication, building of roads, containing the ill-effects of drought and other areas.

Baalu alleged that the Tamil Nadu government had ''misused'' the provisions of Pota to arrest MDMK leader Vaiko and said a special court should be to formed to try Vaiko's case.

He also criticised the filing of a case against DMK leader M Karunanidhi for allegedly inciting the Tamil Nadu government employees to strike work.
