More than 1,000 people have died in a heat wave in Andhra Pradesh, officials said on Wednesday as they warned of a fresh spell of scorching temperatures after a brief respite. State Relief Commissioner DC Rosaiah said 1,037 people had died in the unusually hot weather between May 9 and 15, the worst in four years, as temperatures soared to 48 degrees Celsius in the worst-affected areas.
A spell of rain brought a brief respite to the state last week, but weather officials said persistent dry weather since Monday had triggered fresh heat-wave conditions in some parts of Andhra Pradesh.
They said the heat wave would last for another day or two and the summer would end with the arrival of the annual monsoon rains, expected in early June.
"The second phase of heat wave is not as serious. Temperatures are not as high as a week ago," Rosaiah said, adding that no deaths had been reported in the last two days.
