Jaitley says he would try for a fair deal for farmers
Cancun, Sept 13: Applauded by world`s top NGOs, Commerce and Industry Minister Arun Jaitley today asserted he would return home only after obtaining a fair deal for Indian farmers who would be pushed into destitution if the WTO ministerial conference here failed to find an answer to stop agricultural dumping by the EU and the US on the small and subsistence peasants.
``We all need to go back with something. But the developing countries need to go back with a lot more``, Jaitley said at a full house meeting with the NGOs representing farmers, consumers and development groups.
The commerce minister made this comment answering a question on how would US trade representative Robert Zoellick could go back home agreeing on subsidy cut and face his farmers unless the developing countries give him something in return.
``They (US, EU) must bear in mind that we, the developing countries have already paid a heavy price to them,`` he said.
Jaitley said nobody from the developed countries has questioned the rationale and the fairness of the g 21 paper, but there were attempts to sidetrack the core issue by questioning whether the developing countries can stay together as the meeting enters the most crucial phase tonight.
