The Commander of an opposition Northern Alliance strike force on Saturday said that his forces were on full alert and waiting for the order to advance on the capital Kabul.
Mohammad Afzal Amon said following the Alliance's victory over the Taliban in the city of Mazar-e-Sharif, that he was ready to mount an offensive on the frontlines north of Kabul.
“With the capture of Mazar-e-Sharif, we want to move in a parallel campaign,” he said in an interview at his headquarters in Jabal Saraj. “We are in a state of utter alert and waiting for the order to move. He did not say when his troops would move. The opposition has said that it intends to launch an offensive to take Kabul, but so far has not tried to move against the heavily entrenched Taliban lines there.
Amon said that the Alliance has already sent more than 600 strike force troops to the frontlines north of Kabul. He said, “We will gain the same victory as in Mazar-e-Sharif, we are confident.”
The Opposition on Friday proclaimed victory over Taliban in Mazar-e-Sharif, the most significant prize in Northern Afghanistan. American officials confirmed opposition forces were in the city, and that fighters of the ruling Islamic militia were fleeting. Mazar-e-Sharif was not captured easily, Amon said, but that his troops were prepared for a bloody battle. They are preparing to strike Taliban, He said. “For our country, we are used to sacrificing ourselves. We must suffer martyrs to drive them out of our country.”
