Fourteen people -- one army major, three jawans and nine militants -- were killed in separate gun battles in the Surankote sector of the Poonch district on Tuesday. Army sources said security forces launched a joint operation with security force to flush out militants from hill Kaka, north of Surankote. On sighting the securitymen, the ultras opened fire and in the following encounter eight terrorists were killed.
Major Ashok Sangli of 17 Maratha Light Infantry and three jawans also died in the fierce gun battle, sources said.
The encounter was on when reports last came in. Police said that in an encounter at Hari Buddha at Surankote in Poonch sector, security forces shot dead a terrorist and seized arms and ammunition from his possession.
The slain ultra was identified as Ibrahim belonging to the Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) outfit.
Meanwhile, unidentified terrorists shot dead one civilian Latif Chowdhury at Laloor area under Dessa police station early Tuesday, sources said.
Sources added that twelve Bangladeshi intruders including women and children were apprehended at Shabachak, under Hiranagar police station in Kathua district.
