Madrid, June 04: At least three people were killed and 26 injured when a passenger train collided with a goods train in the eastern Spanish region of Albacete, the railway company said. A main-line passenger train travelling from Madrid to the southeastern city of Cartagena smashed into a goods train near the town of Chinchilla de Monte Aragon, not far from the town of Albacete yesterday, the company said.


The three victims were the drivers of the two trains. A hospital source said at least 26 people were taken to Albacete hospital with various injuries.


The train was carrying 87 passengers at the time of the collision and 30 ambulances were rushed to the scene of the accident which took place at 9:40 pm (0110 IST).

The rail company Renfe said the goods train was not carrying hazardous cargo but that three of the 28 coaches had previously transported sulphuric acid.
As a precaution the civil guard handed out face masks to passengers and rescue workers.

A section of the passenger train was set alight but the fire was quickly put out by firefighters.

According to a witness quoted on national radio RNE, the locomotive of the goods train crashed over that of the passenger train after the impact.
Development minister Francisco Alvarez-Cascos, in charge of transport, and Renfe President Miguel Corsini rushed to the scene of the accident.

It was not known what caused the crash.
