Chennai, Jan 12: Congress today decided to contest the assembly by-election to Sattankulam constituency and appealed to all 'secular, democratic and progressive parties' to support its candidate in the election. In a resolution passed at the executive committee meeting, TNCC said the need of the hour was to defeat the 'anti-people AIADMK and the BJP in the by-polls'.
Briefing reporters on the decisions of the executive meeting, TNCC president S Balakrishnan and spokesperson Peter Alphonse said the executive had decided to contest the polls.
Asked whether the party would seek the support of the DMK they said 'let it come out of the BJP front first'. However, they hastened to add that the congress would welcome support from any quarters to defeat the AIADMK.
Claiming that congress had bright chances of winning, they said the 'immature handling' of the Cauvery issue by AIADMK government had led to poor plight of farmers in the Cauvery delta region.
A resolution adopted at the meeting said the Tamil Nadu government, instead of providing free lunch to the families of farmers, should provide them a bag of rice and rs.1000 every month.
The party would organise demonstration in front of the district collectorates in the state on Jan 21, protesting against the alleged anti-people policies of the Tamil Nadu government, Alphonse said. Bureau Report
