United States, Apr 09: Russian teenager Vera Zvonareva continued her recent good form by knocking out the number eight seed Patty Schnyder in the second round. Zvonareva reached the quarter-finals of the Indian Wells event last month and registered a 6-2 4-6 6-4 win over her Swiss opponent.
Number three seed Lindsay Davenport also moved on to the third round, easing past Daja Bedanova 6-1 6-0. Meghann Shaughnessy, the 11th seed, reached the second round, beating Milagros Sequera of Venezuela 6-2 6-4. But Alexandra Stevenson, the number 17 seed, was a surprise loser on Tuesday as she lost out to Spanish doubles specialist Virginia Ruano Pascual 6-4 6-3.
Mary Pierce and Iva Majoli, who have both been troubled by injury in recent years, both reached the second round, beating Nicole Pratt and Lindsay Lee-Waters respectively.
But Tuesday's later games, including Serena Williams' opening match against qualifier Dally Randriantefy of Madagascar, were all postponed because of rain. Williams will now play on Wednesday.
