Kathmandu, July 19: At least eight Maoists, including an area commander, were killed in separate encounters with security forces in Nepal, the defence ministry said today. Six armed rebels were killed in cross firing during a search operation launched by security forces in Galan area of Mugu district, the ministry said.

Maoist area commander Nain Singh Bohara was killed during an encounter in Pasti area of Durchula district yesterday while another rebel was killed during cross firing in Aladi area of Doti district.

Eight Maoists also surrendered in Sindhupalchowk and Jhapa districts in front of security forces, it said. The ministry said a group of terrorists ran away when locals retaliated during a confrontation in Agra area of Makawanpur district. They left behind various weapons including pistols and socket bombs.

Meanwhile, home minister Khum Bahadur Khadka told reporters that law and order situation has improved as a result of the success attained by the Royal Nepalese Army against Maoists in different parts of the country.

Khadka also reiterated that the government would hold talks with the Maoists only if they laid down their weapons and were sincere about holding talks.
