Taipei, Jan 17: Taiwan President Chen Shui-Bian accused China today of threatening peace and security in the region with its military buildup.

Chen said that China's strategic ambitions and fast military expansion, including the deployment of both short-range and long-range ballistic missiles, should a be a common concern of countries in the region. "Over the past half-century, the undemocratic regime on China has relied on military forces to consolidate its rule over its country and expand its hegemony overseas, which has caused unrest among people in the Asia-Pacific region," Chen said.

Chen made the remarks in his speech to the opening ceremony of the international inter-parliamentary conference on Asian Pacific security held in Taipei.
More than 60 Parliament members from 60 countries, including those from the Taiwan caucus, a pro-Taiwan group formed by bi-partisan members of US House of Representatives, attended the one-day conference.

When meeting the Taiwan Caucus delegates yesterday, Chen pledged he would never let Taiwan be "swallowed" by China or "become a part of another country" during his term.

The Taiwan leader meant he would never accept Beijing' terms for reunification of the two countries, separated in 1949 at the end of a civil war.
Chen said the "one China" policy that Beijing was trying to impose on the island was totally unacceptable to the majority of the Taiwanese people.
