Washington, Oct 24: Microsoft Corp. has been trying to drum up support among U.S. lawmakers as part of its effort to fend off antitrust sanctions being considered by European regulators, congressional sources say. With the European Commission weighing a fine and behavioral changes that could go beyond its U.S. antitrust settlement, Microsoft lobbyists have taken their case to key members of the Senate Judiciary Committee, these sources said.
The world's biggest software company has complained to lawmakers that the sanctions being considered in Europe would conflict with last year's court-ratified settlement with the U.S. government and would disrupt its business.
"They think what the European Union is doing is unusual and wrong, and they want pressure to be brought on (Competition Commissioner Mario) Monti to the extent that's possible," one source said.
