Mumbai, Sept 06: Maharashtra government today stayed admissions to medical courses and announced its decision to approach Mumbai High Court in view of strong protests by students asking for a "fair and just fee structure" in private and UN-aided educational institutions.
"The government will approach the High Court on Monday seeking directives for a revised fee structure and admissions will resume only after a decision by the court in this regard", Minister for Medical Education Suresh Shetty told a news agency here.
Earlier, hundreds of students, seeking admission to medical courses, along with their parents, protested against the higher fee structure in private colleges and virtually brought the admission process to a standstill.
The students objected to the Rs 3.80 lakh fee per annum in private medical institutions compared to Rs 18,000 in government-owned colleges. After the court gave a free hand to private educational institutions regarding fee structure, the educational fees has gone up from the previous Rs 1.25 lakh.
The admission process had begun yesterday after High Court issued guidelines regarding admissions to medical and engineering colleges in deemed universities on September two.
Students from various parts of the state, resorted to an impromptu demonstration at the St George Hospital precincts, where centralised admission procedure to various medical courses is being carried out here.
