The CPI-M on Saturday, condemned the Centre's decision to extend the ceasefire with NSCN (I-M) for another year beyond Nagaland's borders and asked the Vajpayee government to take into confidence states in the northeast and ensure that insurgency does not aggravate. Alleging that the decision was taken without consulting state governments in the northeast, the CPI-M politburo in a statement here demanded that the central government must give an assurance that the ceasefire will not be misused by the NSCN (I-M) to continue to extend help to other extremist outfits operating in the region. The extension of ceasefire without territorial limits in the entire northeast will amount to threatening the territorial integrity of the other northeastern states by lending a sense of legitimacy to the greater Nagaland demand, it said. It said that past experience suggests that unless clear-cut ground rules are defined during the ceasefire and are strictly implemented, normalcy would be elusive. Bureau Report
