New Delhi, Aug 25: The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has appointed USAID to assist it in strengthening regulation and other aspects of health sector, which remained a non-starter even after the entry of 20 odd private players. "We have appointed a working group under IRDA with representation from health and law ministries, insurers and third party administrators. USAID has also been appointed as a consultant to assist us," IRDA chairman CS Rao said on the sidelines of a Ficci seminar on Monday.
He said the group is going into inspection and other regulatory aspects.
The United States Aid for International Development (USAID) has been assisting the Securities and Exchange Board of India since 1994 under the Financial Sector Reforms Programme.

The Finance Ministry has advised IRDA to take the help of USAID in setting international standards in India's under-developed health insurance sector.
Rao admitted that the health insurance covers only 20 lakh people in country. "There is potential for much more but the coverage is still poor," he said. Bureau Report
