Patna, May 30: President A P J Abdul Kalam today asked the Bihar government to draw up a comprehensive 10-year plan giving renewed impetus to agriculture, tourism and education. The Bihar government should prepare a comprehensive 10-year plan to exploit its vast potential for agricultural development, tourism and education, he said, addressing a meeting to mark the diamond jubilee of Bihar Industries Association (BIA).

With its fertile soil and hard working labour force there was no reason why Bihar should remain poor despite its bifurcation and creation of mineral-rich Jharkhand where most major industries of the undivided state were located, he said.

"A hardy Bihari workforce, that has created huge wealth for states like Punjab, Gujarat and Maharashtra, if harnessed usefully, can work wonders for Bihar too."

The President suggested that the state government put emphasis on production of medicinal herbs instead of growing wheat and paddy to reap rich dividends for the farmers.

He said with its great civilizational heritage and existence of a large number of Buddhist, Sikh, Jain and Hindu sacred places, Bihar had huge tourism potential, but it needed to improve infrastructure.

"This is the great land of Buddha and Mahavira and a large number of tourists are interested in visiting Bihar."
