New Delhi, Dec 06: Uma Shankar Misra today took over as the new CBI Director and said tackling corruption and extradition of criminals would be his top priorities.
Immediately after taking over as the CBI chief replacing P C Sharma who retired after nearly two decades of service, Misra said he would lay emphasis on tackling corruption, surveillance on corrupt officials and extradition and deportation of criminals hiding in various countries.
"The foundation stone for these have been laid by my predecessor and I will continue to strive in that direction," Misra, a 1968 batch Orissa cadre IPS officer, told reporters. Asked about his opinion about formation of a federal probe agency, he said the Malimath Committee constituted on reforms in Criminal Justice System had mooted the proposal and it was under the active consideration of the government.
He refused to comment on the recently passed CVC Bill which prohibits the agency from arresting anyone above the rank of joint secretary and said "this is a decision taken by the government and we will have to abide by it."

Earlier, the outgoing Director, P C Sharma said that he had an eventful stay as the head of the country's premier investigating agency. "I leave my office contended," he said.

Besides achieving large number of extradition, the CBI managed to secure deportation of several criminals from Dubai which included Aftab Ansari, wanted for the shooting outside American Centre in Kolkata and Iqbal Kaskar, brother of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim. Bureau Report
