Kolkata, Aug 30: Trade between India and China, as per Chinese statistics, for the period January to December 2002 reached 4.94 billion US dollars, an increase of 37.50 per cent over the same period of 2001. The statistics made available by Indian Chamber of Commerce at a workshop, 'doing business with China', here said while Chinese exports to India during the period increased by 40.80 per cent, Indian exports to China increased by 33.70 per cent during the period.
In 2002, exports of plastics (57 per cent), iron and steel (31 per cent), organic chemicals (67 per cent) and minerals (14 per cent) from India registered significant increase.

Other items that showed high growth rates were electrical machinery (158 per cent), inorganic chemicals (168 per cent) and paper and paperboard (305 per cent). Another encouraging feature was the 56 per cent increase in the exports of machinery and mechanical appliances from India, the statistics revealed.
It said while the export of mineral products from India to China in 2002 increased by 14 per cent compared to 2001, that of cotton, marine and seafood and mineral fuels came down by 20 per cent, 54 per cent and 32 per cent respectively.
India's import from China of chemicals and allied product increased by 43 per cent in 2002, silk by 21 per cent, machinery and mechanical appliances by 27 per cent. Bureau Report
