Ahmedabad, July 09: The Gujarat advocates association today condemned the "intervention of both electronic and print media in judicial proceedings" by commenting upon the court judgement in the Best Bakery case. Yatin Oza, president of the association said in a statement here that a resolution to this effect was passed in a meeting convened in high court premises adding that "this amounts to interference with independence of judiciary".
The association also disapproved the intervention of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and termed it only as a "popularistic measure".
"It is not within the purview, scope or powers of NHRC to hold any sort of inquiry and since it is a constitutional functionary, without using harsh language, the association requests NHRC to be within its bounds,” Oza said.
The association also asked NHRC not to interfere with or in any way sitting in appeal over a judgement delivered by a competent court.
The association further authorised its president and secretary to file contempt petition both against the concerned print and electronic media if they did not stop their "interference" and also against NHRC if it does not cease its intervention forthwith, the statement added.
