Shimla, July 08: Hoping to regain power at the Centre in next Lok Sabha elections, Congress is expected to move forward on the crucial alliance issue by favouring a party-led coalition headed by Sonia Gandhi to defeat the BJP-led NDA at the Hustings.
The party is also likely to make an appeal to former Congressmen to return to partyfold to strengthen the fight against communal forces.
A sub-group at the ongoing brainstorming session of senior party leaders deliberating on "political challenges" have made these recommendations which will come up for discussions at the plenary later today.
A background paper on "political challenges", which formed basis of deliberations on the issue at the meet, spoke of the need for pre-poll alliance wherever necessary.
Arjun Singh is chairman of the sub-group on political challenges and is a known advocate of early finalisation of the alliance issue by the party.
An indication of Congress` deftly-nuanced stand on alliance without giving impression of a major policy change, came from party leaders on the second day of the brainstorming session of senior leaders conveyed ahead of assembly polls to five states and Lok Sabha polls.
CWC member Ghulam Nabi Azad said the doors of Congress were open for a coalition at the national level. He pointed out that congress has coalition governments in a few states.
