Britain is investigating reports that a man claiming to be a British national has been arrested in Pakistan on suspicion of being a member of the al Qaeda organisation, a spokesman for the Foreign Office said on Friday. The spokesman said the Foreign Office was aware of reports that an English-speaking man calling himself "Yaqub" and claiming British citizenship was in hospital in Peshawar after being arrested by Pakistani authorities near the border with Afghanistan.

"Basically we haven't been able to confirm anything at this stage but we are investigating the situation," he told Reuters. "Our people in Pakistan are in contact with various organisations there and are looking into it."
