New Delhi, June 05: Congress today spoke of an "unmistakable" power struggle between the Prime Minister and his deputy triggered by "confusing and conflicting" statements of BJP chief M Venkaiah Naidu on the question of leadership. "There is no ideological conflict. It is an unmistakable power struggle between Vajpayee and Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani triggered by confusing and contradictory statement of BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu", party spokesman Anand Sharma told reporters when asked if the latest statements meant a power struggle in the ruling party.

Stating that these statements were yet another "act of the extension" of the ongoing multiple speak, he said Naidu was able to create some excitement. "We cannot say what the final picture would be as Vajpayee may issue another statement contradicting his earlier position," he said, adding the PM has been making such statements with regard to Pakistan, Kashmir, his retirement and on several other matters.

Asked as to who among the two BJP leaders would be preferred by the Congress party, he said it was not a question of preference but the party would "fight and defeat" BJP and Sangh Parivar irrespective of who is their leader.

Accusing BJP and the Sangh Parivar leaders of indulging in "multiple speak" on different issues "strategically" meant to deflect from their failures, he said "both Vajpayee and Advani are responsible for non-governance, rampant corruption and overall deteriorating socio-economic conditions in the country".
