Jakarta, July 29: The National Congress of Nadhlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia's largest Islamic organisation, has justified "motivated" suicide attacks and recommended such acts to protect the Islam and the interests of Muslim community.
"Committing suicide is strongly prohibited (in Islam) if one does that without being motivated to fight based on faith for the truth. Those doing such things are stupid and violate (god's) rules," Abdul Malik Madani, NU chairman for Yogyakarta chapter, said yesterday. What NU meant as allowing suicide bombings was the one that had ever been carried out by Mohammad Toha, freedom fighter in west Java city of Bandung who equipped himself with a bomb to attack Dutch ammunition warehouse in 1945. The result of what he did was then known as "Bandung Lautan Api" (Bandung sea of fire), he said. Suicide bombings were allowed on three conditions, Madani said reading out the recommendations of the 4-day national Congress, participated by representatives of NU chapters throughout the country.
Firstly, the bomber did that only to protect and fight for Islamic and Muslims' interests, not to kill themselves or get media coverage. Secondly, there was no other effective way to fight, and thirdly, the targets should be parties who were strongly believed to be masterminds or those who did unjust actions against Muslims, he said.

The opening ceremony of the 40 million-member organisation's congress was attended by president Megawati Soekarnoputri, while the closing ceremony was attended by vice president Hamzah Haz.
